The 50/10 Rule: Pomodoro 50 10 Timer

Fifty minutes on, ten off, every hour. A Pomodoro stretched for work that takes a while to get into.

This timer keeps its own settings, separate from the main Pomodoro timer. Your tasks and stats are shared.

Why 50/10 works

The 50/10 split is popular with students and developers because it fits the clock: every block starts on the hour, and the break lands at ten to. That makes it easy to plan (“three blocks before lunch”) and easy to share with others (“I’m free at ten to”).

The longer block gives difficult work room to breathe. The 10-minute break is long enough to stand up, refill water and look at something far away — the classic 20-20-20 advice for screen-tired eyes from the American Academy of Ophthalmology is easy to follow inside it.

Making 50 minutes stick

  • Decide the task before the block starts. The first minutes of a 50 are expensive to waste choosing.
  • Keep a “later” list next to you for stray thoughts.
  • If you are fading at minute 35 every time, drop to 40/10 or go back to 25/5. The best rhythm is the one you finish.

Questions

What is the 50/10 rule?

Work for 50 minutes, break for 10, and every block lines up with the hour: start at :00, break at :50. It is a stretched Pomodoro for tasks that need more warm-up time than 25 minutes allows.

Is 50/10 better than 25/5?

It depends on the task. Writing, coding and problem sets often take 10–15 minutes to get into, so a 25-minute block ends just as you hit your stride. For tasks you are dreading, 25 minutes is easier to start. Many people use 25/5 in the morning to get going and 50/10 once they are warmed up.

Do I still take a long break?

This timer adds a 30-minute long break after every three 50-minute blocks — about two and a half hours of focus. You can change or remove it in Timer settings.

How many 50/10 blocks should I do per day?

Four to six is plenty for most people: that is 3 hours 20 minutes to 5 hours of deep focus.
